7th edition of the AAB Chess Open returns on March 12

Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros. Co. (AAB), the Toyota and Lexus distributor in Qatar, is hosting the AAB Chess Open FIDE-Rated Tournament in collaboration with Qatar Chess Association (QCA). The 7th edition of the AAB Chess Open returns on March 12 and ends on March 18.

This is the first time that the competition will be held at the QCA Training Center. This edition promises to deliver a series of exciting matches in an Over the Board (OTB) tournament setting and in a new venue with more participants. A total of 120 players are expected to take part in this event.

The tournament will be played in 7-Round Swiss System of standard chess over a week. The winners will be determined on the last day of the competition. Great prizes await the successful players of this week-long competition.

All players under 2200 rating points are invited to join the contest.

An entry fee at QR150 and a valid FIDE ID are required for each participant. Registration is open until March 8.

The AAB Chess Open brought the first Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) Rated Tournament in Qatar.

It has become hugely popular across the country and deemed one of the strongest chess tournaments in the region with high-rated players participating in it.

Edition 6 produced 11 newly rated players. It saw great participation from the chess community last year with a substantial number of participants who are FIDE rated. Since its inception in 2018, the tournament elevated 65 players to achieve international rating.

As part of AAB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, this initiative is geared towards building a community of strategic thinkers through sports.

It has paved the way for the Rated players to improve their world ratings and for the Non-Rated players to be rated on an international level.

With a strong partnership with QCA, the tournament has created a meaningful impact on the lives of the young chess enthusiasts as well as adult players who are given the chance to attain global ratings.
