900 containers provided to households for disposing of recyclable materials and organic waste in Onaiza region

The second phase of the trash sorting at source initiative has begun in the Onaiza region. The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the General Cleanliness Department, has given 1,900 containers to families so they may dispose of organic garbage and recyclables separately.

Food trash and cleaning supplies go in the blue bins, while recyclables including glass, plastic, paper, and metals go in the grey containers. By effectively executing its public hygiene policy and the integrated plan for sorting garbage at source by placing rubbish in the specified containers, the Ministry encouraged people to actively contribute to the achievement of the Qatar National Vision 2030. Onaiza households received 950 grey and equal numbers of blue containers in October.

In November 2023, Umm Lakhba, Madinat Khalifa (south), Al Markhiya, and Nuaija will launch the garbage sorting at source scheme. Under this initiative, families will get two different kinds of containers.

The goal of this integrated national programme is to achieve integrated and sustainable development in line with the Ministry of Municipality's strategic plan and the Qatar National Vision 2030 by developing and modernising public hygiene services. The programme is based on the idea of sorting recyclable materials from other waste in a blue container.

Muqbil Madhour Al Shammari, the director of the general cleanliness department, has previously stated that Doha will be the program's initial goal in its second phase. It will cover every family and operate for more than two years, till 2025. He stated that at Umm Salal, Al Daayen, Al Khor, and Al Shamal, the garbage sorting at source scheme will begin in 2026.

Numerous measures will be launched by the Department in collaboration with the relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the trash sorting at source programme. The garbage sorting at source program's first phase, which focused on schools and health institutions, started in 2019.
