First Garangao night will be held by Fire station on April 4

It has been declared by the Fire Station that its first Garangao night will take place on April 4 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Fire Station stated on its official social media account that its activities "include painting on tote bags, distributing sweets, henna, and more for people of all ages."

The gathering will take place in the Fire Station Plaza, which is close to Hamad Medical City and Al Bidda Park.

One of the most significant Ramadan celebrations in Qatar is called Garangao, a time when kids knock on doors and ask their friends for gifts.

The event, which is being observed on the 14th day of the sacred month, is a distinctly Gulf tradition that is most prominent in Qatar, claims Qatar Tourism.

"Taking place in the middle of Ramadan, it was first used to honour kids who were trying to fast. Children in the neighbourhood chant the "Gara," a traditional song, throughout the night as families assemble at a Ghabga and distribute the Garangao, mixed bags of nuts, sweets, sugared kernels, and other candies. The term "gara" is from the Khaliji (Gulf) language and means "two things knocking together," as in "nuts and sweets in bags" or "knocking on doors."

Doha's premier location for modern art and a promoter of artist residencies is The Fire Station.

The limit for submissions for the Open Call for Artist in Residence 8 (2023-2024) has also been reaffirmed as being only until April 15.

For artists who are 21 years of age or older and have a current Qatari ID, the programme is available to all artistic disciplines.

The aforementioned project will last nine months, from September 15 to June 15 of 2024. Over the course of the program, artists will be given a studio space at the Fire Station, giving them an opportunity to develop their artistic practises.

It gives access to open studios, cooperation with curators and foreign critics, mentoring, networking opportunities, and building amenities like the woodshop and fabrication lab. Interested candidates can submit an application at firestation.org.qa.
