The Ministry of Interior (MoI) will begin issuing newly designed licence plates for all newly registered private vehicles from April 1, 2026, as part of its Vehicle Number Plate Replacement Project announced last December.
This marks the second phase of the initiative, aimed at standardising plates and enhancing traffic systems using advanced digital technologies. New vehicles will be assigned plate letters such as Q, T, or R based on the approved sequence.
The project is being rolled out in three phases. The first phase in December 2025 assigned “Q” plates to special numbers via the Sooum app, while the final phase will cover all existing vehicles, with timelines to be announced later.
Until then, current plates will remain valid for renewals and replacements.
