Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has reminded motorists to use their vehicle lights when driving at night, warning that failing to do so is a violation of the Traffic Law.
The ministry said vehicles must have their required lights switched on between sunset and sunrise. The same rule applies during the daytime when poor weather conditions reduce visibility.
Under Article 70 of Law No. 19 of 2007, motor vehicles must use headlights and rear lights when required. Drivers must also switch from high beam to dipped headlights or sidelights when approaching other vehicles to prevent dazzling other road users.
The law prohibits the use of red lights at the front of vehicles, while front lights should generally be white. Yellow front lights may be used in foggy conditions. Separate lighting requirements apply to motorcycles, bicycles and carts.
Article 70 violations are covered by Article 95 of the Traffic Law. According to Qatar’s Al Meezan Legal Portal, offences covered by the provision may be subject to imprisonment of one week to one year or a fine of QR3,000 to QR10,000.
The ministry’s reminder highlights that motorists should check and switch on their vehicle lights before driving at night as an essential road safety measure. The QR3,000-QR10,000 figure refers to the statutory penalty under Article 95 and should not be presented as an automatic QR10,000 fine.
