Geminid meteor shower peaks on the night of December 13

From November 19 to the evening of December 13, the Geminids have been illuminating the sky. Thousands of meteors will rocket over Qatar's skies this evening, making for an amazing astronomy experience.

Under ideal circumstances, the Geminids can produce up to 120 meteors every hour, making them "one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers," according to NASA. The space agency states that "the Geminids are bright and fast meteors, usually appearing yellow."

Debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon is what generated the Geminids. The dazzling streaks of light we see as meteors are caused by tiny meteoroids burning up in our atmosphere as Earth passes through Phaethon's dust trail every year.

As winter weather sets in, attendees are advised to wear warm clothing. Until the sun rises, the event will go on into the early hours of the morning.

Interested parties can register for free on the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club website or get in touch with Ajith Everester or Navin Anand via WhatsApp at 55482045 and 30889582.
