Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim roars to the title at the Zurich Diamond League meet at the Letzigrund Stadium of Budapest World Championships

Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar triumphed at the Zurich Diamond League competition on Thursday at the Letzigrund Stadium, putting his disappointing third-place result at the Budapest World Championships behind him. The high jumper won the Weltklasse competition after clearing 2.35 metres. After winning the championship at the Silesia tournament in July, it was his second victory in the Diamond League this year.

Barshim, who had previously lost the opportunity to win the title of world champion for a record-breaking fourth time, was in excellent condition in Zurich. He moved South Korean Woo Sanghyeok (2.31M) and New Zealander Hamish Kerr (2.33M) into second and third position, respectively.

Gianmarco Tamberi, the current world champion from Italy, who shared the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Mutaz, came in fourth in Zurich. He was unable to get past the level of 2.28M.

In Zurich, Barshim got off to a quick start, clearing the 2.15M and 2.20M bars on his first attempts. He needed a second try to cross 2.24M, but otherwise had little trouble reaching 2.28M, 2.31M, 2.33M, and 2.35M.
