With the formal inauguration of the Karwa electric robotaxis in Doha by the Ministry of Transport (MoT), Qatar is now among the first cities in the area to use cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology. Qatar's dedication to innovation, safety, and sustainability in public transportation is reflected in the program, according to the Government Communications Office (GCO).
The MoT stated in June that it will oversee a pilot project with Mowasalat (Karwa) to test level-4 electric robotaxis along a few service and tourist routes. The experiments will be conducted in two stages: fully autonomous passenger journeys after supervised passenger-free operations. To guarantee accurate detection and navigation, each vehicle is outfitted with four radars, four LiDAR sensors, and six long- and mid-range cameras.
In order to address future mobility, sustainability, and regulatory frameworks, politicians, industry leaders, and innovators from more than 25 countries will gather at the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum 2026, which is being organized from April 7 to April 9, 2026.
