Qatar updates cybercrime law to protect online privacy

The State of Qatar has revised its cybercrime laws to target the unapproved online publication or distribution of people's photos and films without their knowledge or agreement, or in circumstances that are not permitted by law.

The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has authorized the amended law No. (11) of 2025, which was published in the official Gazette on August 4, 2025, in Edition No. 20 of 2025.

The revision amends Law No. (14) of 2014 on fighting cybercrime by adding a new article, Article (8) (bis).

The new clause stipulates that violators may be imprisoned for a maximum of one year, fined up to 100,000 Qatari Riyals, or both.

According to the article, the law will go into force as soon as it is published in the official gazette.
