HMC urges vigilance against heat-related illnesses this summer

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is urging the public to take extra precautions to protect themselves and their families—especially children—from heat-related illnesses during the hotter months and extended school summer break.

The Hamad Injury Prevention Program (HIPP) at HMC’s Hamad Trauma Center, a WHO Collaborating Center, has released a list of safety tips to help reduce heat-related risks.

Medical experts at HMC warn that children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat and humidity. Symptoms such as high body temperature, clammy skin, irritability, excessive thirst, sweating, headaches, dizziness, or weakness can appear quickly and escalate into heat exhaustion or heatstroke if not treated promptly.

To stay safe, caregivers are advised to:

- Never leave children unattended outdoors, especially in direct sunlight.

- Ensure everyone stays well hydrated. Water helps replace essential salts lost through perspiration.

- Monitor outdoor play and be alert to early signs of heat stress.

- Use a reliable weather app to track temperature and humidity. Extra care is needed when temperatures exceed 40–45°C or humidity rises above 50%.

- Avoid areas with heat-absorbing surfaces like asphalt and concrete.

- Take breaks every 30 minutes during outdoor activity and drink water every 15 minutes.

- Use shade or air-conditioned areas to cool down regularly.

- Wipe sweat, use cool towels, and change into dry clothing as needed.

HMC reminds families that prevention and early action are key to avoiding serious heat-related health issues.
